It has just been announced that there will be power cuts for 7 hours a day in Sri Lanka. It could be said that many people in Sri Lanka face a daily struggle for survival. This is in contrast to places like New York where most people have an easy life 99% of the time, which leaves them unprepared for the occasional nasty shock. Which is better? I am not sure.

Tsunami is an example shows... even countries not in to the band of 99% easy life has to be prepared for the occasional nasty shock! It does not mean that New York is the best.

Hi, I am Sri Lankan (although most of my life i have lived and worked in the UK), now i am maried to a Belgian and we both are planning to move to Sri Lanka. We have tought about it seriously and i would be grateful if someone could tell me WHY WE SHOULDNT MOVE?
Power cuts, etc.... doesnt bother me!!! Life is life.....
The reason why we want to move is to lead a HAPPIER and more RELAXING life in Colombo. We do enjoy our lives here but people who are in the UK will understand why we intend to move!

Live once, to the fullest... that's long enough

Hello Londener, I am currently resident in Europe, and only wish to state my opinion about a phrase that you had written, that quite struck me as a paradox. The reason why we want to move is to lead a HAPPIER and more RELAXING life in Colombo. I don't know, but perhaps you meant the posh and highly civilised life in "Kurundhuu Watta"? Where else in Colombo can you lead a Happier and relaxing life? Please don't get me wrong. I'm not critisicing my own country. All my life i've observerd ppl come home from work only carring more on their shoulders to complete at home. Ever heard of ppl in the 30's and above going for a stroll or a walk. It's the evergrowing competition to be better and and earn more for your family and self. While in Europe... or at least where i am... ppl come home to relax. They stroll the parks and relax with nature. They have time to deal with their hobbies. A sri lankan usually has no time for that. Not that we are boosting with energy to help our country. It's always how much the other has that counts. Whatever you have seems to be of less importance. You are forced to fall into the never ending race of getting more than the ppl around you. But nonetheless, you have to live there to feel it all. So wish you all the best.

Hi! thanks for you "Opinion"!!!! You live in Europe! I presume you do or do not count UK as part of Europe? If you do then it is a different story! Apart from my lovely work in an investment bank! where i earn a considerable amount of money, i have a company as well. All is good! We are going to LK only with a solid finacial and a solid business plan. I have several good contacts back in CMB and i wish to utilise them before i move. Apart from just enjoying the lovely life in CMB i want to build my copmany there as well. I am not closing down my company here in UK but going to keep it running and managed by my current Chairman. So finacially there will be ££££ coming into our NRFC account. So tell me one good reason why i should stay?

Londer, My understanding was that one of the former US Embassy Ambassadors retired in SL. I can't give you any reasons to stay in the UK, as I've never been there. I've also never been to SL. I'm interested to see what the good reasons are. SL, in my mind, seems so romantic and beautiful. I have floated the idea to move there past my husband several times, but he refuses. He doesn't want to go back until politics are semi-sorted out or stabilized. Plus, I have obligations and personal growth to worry about before I leave this country. Plus, I don't think there could be anything more beautiful than Oregon. You, on the other hands, seem to have your marbles all in a row and sorted by color even, heh? Good luck. UK to SL is a big move!

Dear Londener,
Financial wise you may have planned your marbles well ahead, and i'm in no way trying to discourage you in your quest.
All i'm commenting about is your phrase "Happier and Relaxing life". Here your marbles only play a minute role, as marbles can't climb hills without help.
Or do you feel financial adequacy in SL guarantees you a "Happier and Relaxing life"?

Hi Londoner,
I am from Sri Lanka although for past two years I have lived in Australia.
What exactly do you think you would miss if you stayed in the UK? Life in SL (and Colombo) is quite different, and if you enjoy that life style, moving to SL is a good option for you, considering you will have a steady source of income.
I find Sri Lanka more bustling, busy, event-filled, warm & sunny, tropical...the list goes on. If you consider power-cuts, water-cuts, traffic, dust & smoke on the roads are facets of life and not life-threatening situations, I don't see any reasons for you to worry.
On the plus side, if you have a high end income, (say, over RS 150,000-200,000 a month), you will find your life more enjoyable than that in a western country. You will be part of the elite community who receive VIP treatment wherever the go!
You might consider temporarily moving to SL, say for a year, and see how it is going.
Good luck.

Thanks for the information! Like i mentioned i don’t mind the hussle and bussle of CMB. Even UK is even busy but less polluted. Traffic here is a chaos? I face it everyday. I am not going blind folded as i will ensure that my company here in the UK generates some sort of income for me monthly! Plus onto of that we will be running our own business (4 business plans already prepared). So we would be earning more than RS200,000 per month but no immediately but say in 6-8mths.

Did anyone already ask how it is to raise a family in SL? What type of healthcare is available for children? Education? Safety? Parks?

Well, good luck. I have long dreamt about returning to live in Sri Lanka, but this is not the right time at the moment.
As you are well aware, this is a lifestyle choice. I hope it works out for you. Let us know how you get along.
Best wishes,
