........whilst the majority has nothing. They are all the same. Do not expect any miracles from the UNP. They are too busy amassing the spoils.

Tax- free vehicles for over 60 MPs in new parliament
By Shamindra Ferdinando

Over 60 MPs of the twelfth parliament are entitled to brand new tax free 2800 CC petrol or 3000 CC diesel vehicles, political sources said adding that they include the newly elected members and several others who represented the last parliament but were denied the facility due to the dissolution of the house on October 10.
They include MPs representing the UNP led United National Front, the PA, the JVP, the SLMC [in the north-east electoral districts they contested alone] and the TULF led Tamil National Alliance. "There are at least nine national list MPs among the lucky lot," the sources said.

Each MP would be able to buy the vehicle by paying Rs 10,000 in monthly instalments over a five-year period on a depreciated value. They qualify to own the vehicle a year before their six-year terms ends, the sources said expressing the belief that the majority were likely to go for Mitsubishi Monteros.

October dissolution dashed hopes of 71 then newly elected MP s- 33 from the UNP, 19 PA, 2 NUA, 2 SLMC, 1 CWC, 1 ACTC and one Sihala Urumaya - of obtaining brand new tax free vehicles. Parliamentary Affairs Ministry was on record as saying that the MPs ordered 48 Mitsubishi Monteros, three Mercedes Benz, three Super Luxury BMWs, two Nissan Patrols and nine double cabs and two passenger vans.
Some of those affected by the decision to go for early elections, did not return to parliament this time. Some contested but lost while other did not even win places in districts and national lists of their respective parties. Others who were on their respective national lists were not fortunate enough to get into the final lists submitted to Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, the sources said.
The new MPs will also be part of the controversial pension scheme that allows them to draw full pension after completing a single five-year term.

Sri Lankans and their politicians are too divided in different party politics -there is no UNITY to face a national issue. Why do we need "party" and "colours" in National Issues?Huh LTTE is a grave threat to Sri Lanka as a whole. they killed and murdered for years and ran propaganda against Sinhala, Buddhists and the Sri lankan State, in all other countries and collected funds to kill in sri Lanka, Now they cunningly pulling the wool over the eyes of PM Ranil Wickramasinghe and trying for Peace talks because they cannot operate well in other countires now when the whole world is against Terrorists! they want to push their luck thru' new PM and find a way for a Tamil Nation. In this issue against terrorists, all sri lankans should throw away party politics - we do not want Divisions like UNP SLFP JVP TULF SU etc,,, but unite as one group and in one voice we must reject terrorists whom we cannot trust. People should tell the politicians to forget their party and work together. all these years they only think of how to get vote, how to come to power- and even go low enough to make use of terrorists to come to power!! Do they care about a Nation and People (except to get vote)?
