8)Has anyone here read Anil's Ghost by Michael Ondaatje? I think it's a great book with only a few imperfections.

Hopefully the paperback will be out by July. I managed to borrow a copy from the library here. The main topic is the killing spree which occurred between 1988 and 1990, a very sad episode in the history of Sri Lanka. I found it hard to beleive in the main character, Anil, but some of the other characters are very interesting.

I read it & liked it. Sad stuff, but does reflect events that happened in the late 80's in Sri Lanka. "Anil's Ghost" may be a good introducion to the violent surreal horrors of Sri Lanka - to anyone not familiar with that stuff. I liked his other Sri Lankan book "Running In The Family" better - its light & amusing and offers info. on aspects of Sri Lankan life that most likely were completely changed after 1948 (and after 1972 and definitely by the time I was young enough to understand the world in the early 80's). Looking forward to Ondatjjee's (sp?) next book. Also need to check out I think "Cinnamon Gardens" at some point - a novel by a Sri Lankan-Canadian writer. On the new music front, need to check out M.I.A., a Sri Lankan Tamil-British female musician, her new CD is getting a lot of great reviews. Sujewa http://www.wilddiner.com/PS: In an interview that I conducted w/ a local (Washington, DC) humanitarian activist I talked briefly about seeing dead bodies on the side of a road in '89 (on a family vacation to Sri Lanka) - I believe that time period is covered in "Anil's Ghost", here's the link to the interview: http://www.wilddiner.com/andersen.htm

I listned to a track on line (search for a free MP3 on google, you'll find some) earlier today. Music is good. BUT, I have serious problems with her politics - she seems to be in favor of the LTTE - a guerrila group in Sri Lanka whose methods of action in the past have included suicide bombings of civilians and a whole host of other morally questionable activities. Of course their enemy (the SL Gov) has not behaved significantly better in the valuing of human life &rights department. There is a whole massive discussion on this topic here: http://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=5384479You might want to first check out this Village Voice article that will introduce the issue to you if u r not familiar w/ it: http://villagevoice.com/music/0509,christgau1,61607,22.htmlAnd, now there is a spin-off message board from the first site that I've listed that tries to tackle just the Sri Lanka/LLTE issue that arose from the fan discussions about M.I.A.: http://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=5458536#5624722Good luck! Later. Sujewa http://www.wilddiner.com/

Interesting. I'm sure my husband wouldn't appreciate it then if I went out and bought her album knowing this. Thanks!

I know, I don't think my husband would appreciate it either! Does anyone know of any good sinhalese singers or groups and where to download for free some of their music?

Interesting, but not fantastic. Ondaatje was writing for his readership - very much a Western readership - which comes through very clearly.
I'm quite a fan of Ondaatje's, but didn't think this was one of his better novels.

I'm German. "Anils Ghost" was published here in Germany, too. I have read the book and I think it's very interesting. As well as another one of Ondaatje, called "Running in the family".
This year I have started collecting books about Sri Lanka, your wonderful country!
Not so easy, as you can imagine ... Got about 10 now, I guess. Some of them second hand ... not so easy!

What have you got, Melody? Are you collecting fiction only, or are you collecting non-fiction as well?

Got all kinds of documentaries and travel-literature. But I like fiction, too. Most entertaining is belletristics combined with reality-background, I think.

Who have you come across so far? There seem to be a lot of Sri Lankan (fiction) authors around these days.
